Elder Led

Summit, under the lordship of Jesus Christ is an elder led church. We see this laid out very clearly throughout scripture, in particularly in the book of Acts and then also in the letters of 1st Timothy and Titus. The elders that serve at Summit lead in three distinct categories. First, the elders lead in the affairs of the church. Elders are overseers of the congregation (Acts 20:28, 1st Timothy 3:4-5). With this in mind, Summit has determined to use the phrase “Elder led” over the phrase “Elder rule”. We have done this in order to make it clear that the elders in the church do not rule in a dictatorial manner over the membership but instead lead the congregation with the hearts of the members in mind. The elder led church is one where the elders lead in the everyday decision making of the church, or the everyday normal affairs of the church, and yet when major decisions face the life of the church, the elders willingly approach the church with their recommendation and insight and then listen to the church body as a whole when these major decisions are required. Second, the elders serve to oversee the teaching of God’s Word (1st Timothy 3:2, Titus 2:1). The elders make sure that the word of God is taught, that proper doctrine is expressed, and that the congregation has ample opportunity to hear the word of God rightly divided. Third, the elders at Summit also have the responsibility to see that the membership is always protected from the false teachers and the false teachings of this world (Titus 1:9). The elders are to confront wrong doctrine when it arises and the elders are also to confront those that present wrong doctrine. The heart of the elder is one that does not want any one of God’s children to be led astray by the philosophies and ideological whims of this world.

As the Apostle Paul spoke for the final time to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20:28 he said to them “Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.” It is with this sentiment that the elders at Summit Baptist Church serve.
